Madison Park MCAS Gain Leads State

The largest Proficient/Advanced gain in the state

by Gary Kaplan, JFYNetWorks Executive Director

MCAS scores for 2017 were released last month. JFY’s partner schools logged many good results, but Madison Park Technical Vocational High School was far and away the year’s high point.

Madison Park has come in for heavy criticism for many years. Every news story about school problems cites it as one of the lowest performing schools in the state. There is justification for concern: scores have historically been low and the school was demoted to Level 4 in 2015. In our skill-hungry labor market, it makes sense to be concerned: how can we support a burgeoning tech-based economy if Boston’s only vocational school can’t produce skilled workers?

Relationships bridge academic success

by Greg Cunningham, JFYNetWorks Blended Learning Specialist

The world of education has a natural tendency to focus on the academic. A student needs to learn to write, solve equations, analyze a piece of literature, and then demonstrate all that and more in comprehensive testing.

What is often lost amid the lessons and tests is what makes a student want to learn. Adults understand that education can be the great equalizer, the social leveler. But helping a young, not fully developed mind understand how important education is can be a daunting, even maddening task. It is easy for teachers, administrators and school support staff to focus on the lessons and lose sight of the human being that is the student.

JFYNet is my Dream Job

My dream Job! How I got here had many twists and turns.

by Cathie Maglio, Blended Learning SPECIALIST

From 5th grade on all I wanted was to be a math teacher. And I did that after graduating from college, but it turned out not to be a good experience for me, so I left the classroom and looked for other forms of instructing. I worked as a data technician, a technical illustrator and tech writer, and a marketing assistant. I got closer to teaching in the classroom when I worked in textbook publishing and got to influence how math concepts were taught in the classroom.
