MCAS: Still Relevant, Still Important
Massachusetts students no longer need to pass the 10th-grade MCAS to graduate. Does that make MCAS irrelevant? Absolutely not. Though the graduation rule have changed, MCAS tests are still a vital resource for students, schools, parents and our entire education system.
Why MCAS Still Matters
1. Federal Requirements and Accountability
Schools must still give standards-based tests in grades 3 to 8 and 10. This is a federal law, not just a state requirement. MCAS meets this need by tracking student progress and holding schools accountable.
2. School Performance and Rankings
MCAS scores play a big part in how schools are judged. These results affect school ratings and influence how resources are allocated. Ignoring the MCAS means losing a key measure of school performance that helps guide improvements.
3. Measuring Essential Skills
The MCAS tests how well students are learning Massachusetts curriculum standards. These standards cover core skills—reading, math, science, critical thinking, problem-solving and communication. Whether or not MCAS is a graduation requirement, these abilities remain essential for success in college, work, and daily life.
