JFY introduces NEW AI Writing Assessment Tool

JFY AI Writing Assessment Tool

Teachers at the Center

JFY has been in  the forefront of education  innovation  for four decades through its selective adoption of emerging technologies in the development of blended learning.  The advent of  Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)  promises a new wave of  change that may prove more transformative than any previous innovations.  JFY is harnessing AI  to develop tools  that will help teachers perform instructional and administrative tasks more efficiently and more effectively to optimize the most precious resource in education: a teacher’s time.

JFY has worked with teachers to develop  the first AI application in what we intend to be a suite of AI tools called the JFY AI Teacher Assistant System. The first of these new tools is the JFY Writing Assessment Tool. This tool  provides teachers with detailed feedback on student essays to inform  effective writing instruction by helping  teachers  focus on specific skill areas where students need help.  This formative approach ensures that students receive the support they need to  develop their  writing skills. The JFY Writing Assessment Tool streamlines assessment,  reducing teachers’ workload by automating the evaluation process  and freeing up teacher time  to provide  prompt , direct  and personalized instruction.

The  Writing Assessment Tool supports writing instruction with detailed analysis, constructive feedback, and predictive scoring of student essays. The tool provides detailed feedback on the standard components of writing, including thesis development, evidence, organization, expression of ideas, awareness of task, sentence structure, grammar, usage and mechanics.

Key Features include:

  • Detailed Diagnostic Analysis: Identifies strengths and areas for improvement, providing actionable feedback aligned with state standards.
  • Batch Essay Submission: Allows for individual or batch upload of essays, delivering individualized feedback for each student and overall class recommendations.
  • Educational Resource Integration: Includes MCAS practice prompts, scoring rubrics and sample essays for a comprehensive approach to assessment and skill development.
  • Predictive Scoring based on MCAS or teacher-specified criteria.

Teachers are instrumental in shaping these tools to meet their classroom needs. For the Writing Assessment Tool, teachers have developed writing prompts and identified reading selections that align with state standards. AI requires extensive input and  modeling to accurately assess student writing. Benchmarked scored essays help the AI app learn writing styles and proficiency levels to ensure accurate assessments. Teachers have developed and refined the scoring rubrics, shaped the tool’s model of a well-written essay, and established the evaluation criteria. Completed assignments are converted into Writing Assessment Prompts and added to the JFY Writing Assessment Library. All these formative processes, which are ongoing,  ensure meaningful, goal-aligned, actionable feedback.

JFYNetWorks is committed to enhancing educational outcomes through targeted infusions of  technology.  Our latest advance, the AI Writing Assessment Tool, reflects this commitment. As we continue to refine and develop our applications of AI, we will continue to  keep educators in the center of the collaboration to ensure that our tools meet the evolving needs of the classroom.

Our core methodology is described by the acronym  AIMS:  Assess, Instruct, Measure, Support. This  methodology drives  all our programs.  Its four elements are:

  • Assessment: Utilizing online tools and existing school data to diagnose students’ individual learning needs.
  • Instruction: Providing high-quality software that aligns with state standards, course curricula and district pacing guides. Online instruction can be customized for specific programs, standardized assessments and individual learning needs and styles.
  • Measurement: Monitoring student progress through the curriculum as recorded in the embedded data system. Close attention to student performance enables timely intervention.
  • Support for teachers and students is provided onsite and remotely via zoom, text, phone, email and on our website. We use real-time student data to make instructional adjustments that keep students on track. Continuous professional development and support for teachers builds proficiency and confidence.  This structured and supported use of online content maximizes its effectiveness as a tool for teaching and learning, and for acceleration.
